if you don't have over 3 gigs of ram, why bother with the hassle of dealing with finding things compatible with 64 bit (drivers, av, etc)?

As far as xp vs vista, it all depends on which you want. I run vista ultimate, but I've run into many problems, most of which have been smoothed out as time goes on, but that's completely up to you. I'd say XP is where you should go. However if you do go 64bit, vista x64 has much friendlier reviews than XP x64 My System: hAvAAck Build 3

TBH, any new computer should be running Vista now. There are a lot less problems with it now then there were.
32 / 64 bit are just a personal choice. 64 is the future, and support is getting a lot better but many programs still have problems with it. I suggest you choose Vista 32 bit. 32 bit will only support about 3 Gigabytes of RAM though.
