Hi,
I have a question about RAM and XP Home. I have an Intel 3.0ghz dual core, 4 GB 1000mhz Patriot Extreme(heat sinks and all), Nvidia 9800GT 512MB, on board sound, 3 hard drives = 1.5TB, and 700watt power sup. OK.. I am only able to get my system to recognize 2.5 GB of this kick butt RAM I have. I know XP has issues that limit it to 3.5 GB and I was thinkin that the Video card could be subtracting 512MB but even in those circumstances I still should be showing 3.0GB right???? When I boot up the system checks show over 4GB and all chks out ok. I have moved the RAM to the other slots..same story. Anyone got a reasonable answer to this... maybe a fix??

Why on earth would the video card make you have any less RAM recognised?

Am I wrong there? I was told by an instructor at school that while the RAM is there the RAM on the card acts as RAM on the mthr board or is recognized that way... I saw my problem and assumed that this was in fact tru...I am always happy to learn that i was misinformed, however that kinda makes my problem a little more of a concern.

I also run into times when I get "out of memory" type of errors when running heavy programs like 3ds max and REVIT Architeture. That is really why I think there is an issue with the system somewhere..

Hmm...

Well if a graphics card says it is 512MB, that means it has its own RAM on it. I don't think it has any affect on system RAM at all.

Have you got all the RAM settings on auto etc.?

Thanks for the response... On the fourth even....Happy 4th.

Anyway i just rebooted and checked the bios and yes all the settings are in either normal or auto. The software allows some over clocking which i don't know enough about to fool with yet.

32bit can only use 3.25gb of system ram, that include GFX card ram.

Ah.

I didn't know that included graphics RAM.

That's good to know, thanks for that

That's probably what it is then, you've got a fairly large GPU.
