The wifes toshiba equium with xp home refuses to start up. She was browsing the net as you do when our daughter pushed a key (don't know what key it was). Straight away a message appeared in the bottom right corner of the screen saying that there wasn't enough memory, then it crashed back to the toshiba screen. It gets as far as the black xp screen where the blue lines go from left to right but then goes to a quick blue screen, which i cannot read too well as it only stays for a second, then reboots itself. What i have managed to read is a quick glimpse of the word 'corrupt' and dumping physical memory. It does this in all modes (safe mode as well as last known good configuration). As the laptop came with xp pre installed there is no installation cd, so what can i do?

Thanks.

Sounds like it could be a memory issue, take the little memory panel off the back( when unplugged and powered down) and check to see if there are two memory stick, if so you can then take one out at a time and try and find out if one of them has gone bad

Could also be corrupt Operating System files.

As you cannot boot you could get a boot CD like this > http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PC-Repair-Boot...3A1|240%3A1308

Then boot off the CD into a virtual OS, run a hard drive check disc from there and see if that sorts it.

I have checked the memory, There is one 256mb stick in there. I put my ubuntu cd in and tried to run as a live cd but it just hung halfway through loading, but saying that the cd cover says it needs a minimum of 384mb ram to run the live cd so that's probably why. I shall go the boot cd route and see what happens, and i may as well get her to upgrade her ram in the process. It was pure luck she backed up all her files before it happened

Adding RAM you will see a big performance increase (and hopefully sort your problem) If you did decide to upgrade - with RAM prices cheap as they are I would plug for removing the old 256mb and adding a 1GB stick, depending on your motherboard you might have to get a 2x512 kit. Just make sure you get the right speed RAM for your laptop
