Got a situation, I've seen other posts on this but still can't get it figured out. All of a sudden my computer found a virus and cleaned it and then logged me off. Ever since, now when I go to log back on (XP Pro), I click the icon it loads my settings, then shows the wallpaper for a split second, then logs me off back to the user icon screen. It does this for all users including administrator. I've tried logging in all using all of the safe modes, same thing. I've tried logging in holding shift, same thing. I've tried logging in using last known good configuration, same thing.

I read somewhere to use the install cd and enter repair mode to rename the userinit.exe file in the registry but there isn't a file named that.

So I tried to do a repair install, everything apeared to be going as planned, reinstalling all the XP files, took about an hour. It restarted the computer and back to the icon screen and again same thing, login/logoff loop.

Any recommendations on what to try next?

Do you own another PC? Putting the drive into one and performing a full checkdisk will repair any files and the file system/tables. That tends to fix 99% of loop problems.

Unfortunately I don't own another PC. I can get to the C: prompt through the repair module. When I run chkdsk, it says one error found.
