How do I change my current Operating System XP Home, to XP Pro, without losing my files, using a hard drive with an installed XP Pro because a Windows CD is not available and my current O/S is not Window authenticated (WGA).
Can I install the HD and then make it the boot drive and access all my current files ?

You can't upgrade from home to pro, you have to start fresh on either over the old OS or as dual boot.

If you dual boot all your personal files will be accessible but programs will need to be reinstalled.

Bummer. My dilemma is my O/S is not WGA and is very old.
I have backed up my system using Norton Ghost on an external drive.
I can't run the WinXP updates because my O/S doesn't pass the WGA check.
I came across an ad for a very inexpensive computer with a Intel PIII I Ghz, 256 Ram,
Mobo with a nic, 30G HD with XP Pro loaded, with Window Authorization number.
I thought this was a solution. So I can't merge the 2 systems ending with an O/S w/WGA.

I know this is a mad idea but why not buy it.

Hello Sweeney. I have a few questions:

1. Do you have a genuine Windows disc?
2. Do you have a genuine Windows installation key?
3. Do you have your files and important folders backed up (preferably on external media)?

Please answer the above questions as that will let us figure out what is possible and what is not in your case. Let us know the required information as soon as possible.
