XP Takes A Long Time To Shut Down

Do you have an iPod? If so try disconnecting it, I have heard some people have trouble booting up and shutting down with one connected, my mums PC won't get past the BIOS screen if it's connected.

XP Takes A Long Time To Shut Down

Does it show any messages whilst it is shutting down?

Does it leave the desktop and get to the Windows is shutting down screen?

Post back and I can give more advice.

XP Takes A Long Time To Shut Down

I just posted this for another user but it might work for you as well.

Go to Start - Run

Type regedit.exe

You can try changing how long Vista will wait when trying to kill a process at shutdown.

1. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control]
2. Change the value of “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” to 4000

Make sure you have a System Restore Point set before you do this.

What it basically does is reduce the time it will wait before it will automatically kill processes that don't respond at first.

You will have to restart once to allow the changes to take effect.

See if this helps and post back.

I don't know why it would be wireless broadband causing it.

Can you post a Hijack This log so as we can rule out the possibility of any malware causing it?

Download and rename <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!> (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open Hijackthis.
  • If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
  • Click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
    • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Note: Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.

XP Takes A Long Time To Shut Down

Hmmm. Doesn't seem to be much there.

You can re run HJT and fix these two:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

Have you installed any new programs recently?

Well im sure norton 360 isnt helping, as norton products before 2007 are terrible resource hogs and slow some computers to a crawl.

How would you feel about uninstalling Norton and going with free alternatives which are much better?

Those two things we fixed will have made no difference to the speed of the shutdown. They were just left over from previously uninstalling something that didn't get completely removed.

How old is the computer? What sort of specs is it?
