Hi,

For the last year or so I have used AVG 7.5. However, recently that inspired and AVG are charging for the 8 or 8.5 version on their site, which is valid for one year.

If anyone can provide advice as to the best free anitvirus software that I should install and also If I should use a separate firewall from windows. Previously I used PCTools firewall but then it kept blocking my internet pages so I used Windows instead.

Many thanks,

Hope to hear back soon.

It is a dell desktop, windows xp

I agree with Fordy. I use Avast on my computers. I haven't settled on a firewall yet, still using the MS one, which Evil Fantasy (one of our malware experts here) says is stupid of me lol. I need to find a good firewall.

Ah, my bad.

Well just check out that thread then

TBH though I have no complaints with the MS thing. I may do ServerGuys custom firewall Linux thing.. I forget what it's called sometime next year. Need to look into it more first though.

I use AVG free - 8.5 is the current version. Never had any problems at all. And yes, if you use XP then you need a third party firewall. The XP firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic - only incoming. They fixed this in Vista.

Now wait a minute you Scottish haggis (lol my dad's side of the family are from Scotland so I can say that), EF didn't say that. I run Vista Ultimate 64, so you are saying I don't need a 3rd party firewall? I also use a linksys router so doesn't THAT also give me some protection? I am SO confused...........
