My 10-year old son is really into World of Warcraft but my husband was concerned he might be exposed to too much swearing etc. To check up on him, he set something up between the 2 computers so that he could read anything my son wrote in chat - it came up like a transcript. Is this some sort of key logger? If so, will there be any trace of it on my son's computer?

You need to let us know what was installed. Sounds like a keylogger but that's just speculation.

I have no idea what was installed, sorry. Would there be any evidence on my son's pc? (My husband has taken his pc away so there's no way of checking that one.) I had never ever heard of the term - or thought about the concept of a "key logger" - until I came on this website which was very recently.

Keyloggers by design are normally hidden so are hard to find. You could run some antivirus scans and that may or may not find it.

I've had a look at the Task Manager which has a list of applications. How can I tell if one is suspicious or not? Should I just google each one separately? I'm not an IT person so they all look "weird but probably normal".

Is it worth downloading something like a-squared (free key logger detection software)? I'm so unsure of this kind of stuff so I wanted to check with you first...

Thanks for your help.

Download, update and run a-squared Free edition

At the main menu, click Scan Now, there will be 4 options, choose Deep Scan and then click Scan

* If malware is found, click the button Remove Selected Malware
* If malware is found, select all found and click Quarantine selected objects
* Click Save Report. Save the report to somewhere convenient, such as your desktop
* Add the report as an attachment in your next post.

Sorry but which bit do I need to click on with that link you gave me? Is it Alternative 1? I clicked on that and it said "Registry Mechanic".

I don't think my current security settings will allow for it anyway :-(
I had a look at another website for this download.
