I'm using Microsoft Office 2003. Nobody else has user accounts on this computer.

Sorry for the delay. What you need to do is start the computer in Safe Mode. First turn off the computer then restart it. As the computer is booting tap your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key. Once the login screen loads you will see an administrator login, click that. If it asks for a password don't enter anything, just press the Enter key on the keyboard. Once the desktop loads go to the Start button and choose Control Panel. Once that loads choose User Accounts. From there you can adjust your user account to have administrator privileges. Once finished restart the computer in Normal Mode.

Thank you for your help. I will try this. I'm just so worried about changing the settings in any way - I just find this IT stuff a mystery!

This is just basic stuff every user should know. You have to start somewhere and learning how to control your computer, rather than it controlling you, is the best place.

You are right. I will try this out on my son's computer and keep this website open on my laptop. That way I can maybe ask you a question if I get stuck? Unfortunately it can't be tonight though as it's already very late here. In the meantime, here's a small question for you. Is it normal for yahoo (email) to have a "save operation in progress" dialogue box? I was writing an email to a friend and it just erased the whole message!

When my laptop was restarting, I pressed f8. Just as you said, it did have "windows advanced options menu" etc. I didn’t take it much further than that, as I realised it would be much safer for me to do all this on my son’s computer instead – unlike me he doesn’t have anything irreplaceable on his computer plus there is almost definitely a key logger installed on his computer (and not necessarily on my laptop). So next I tried out your instructions on my son's computer. As the computer was restarting I pressed f8. It just came up with "windows xp" highlighted so I clicked on that. Then it seemed to me to start the computer in the normal way, as it took me to the screen where there are just 2 log-in icons - one for me (with a password) and one for my son (also with a password, but different). There was no administrator option or icon anywhere, so that confused me. What does this mean, please? Thank you for your help.

You need to choose Safe Mode.
