My avast anti virus expires in 17 days ...i thought it was free but it says i need to purchase it again for a year or 3 years. Isn't it free anymore? if it is then how do I get it free again would I need to uninstall it and re install it or something?

Hi

Not an Avast user myself but a quick check on their website shows that you can reregister for the free version.

Pop here for the registration page and to get a new serial

http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

Also from the page they state...

avast! 4 Home Edition works for 60 days after the installation in demo mode. You will obtain your FREE license key by E-mail after the registration. The license key is valid for 1 year. After one year you will need to just re-register.

Regards

Yep, sbj's right.

I use it on all my PC's, and just re registered a couple of days back on this one, it IS STILL FREE, you just have to get a new free serial.

I don't really see how this benefits them but hey, it's how it is

I've never liked the 14 month deal and don't know why they do it. Maybe it's their way of keeping tabs on exactly how many free users they have?

Yeah, or it might be something to do with payed subscription for the corporate version, like they keep the same model for distributing serials, except the free one issues a free serial, and the payed issues a request for monies..

It probably also keeps paid techs from installing it in their shops. While Avast is free if you install it while being paid, or on a machine you are selling, then you are essentially charging for the free license by making money on your service.

I guess..

But how hard would it be to convince a non-savvy customer that it was a one-time fee, and anyway, in any lawsuit they could claim that they were paid for the labour and service, not for the program itself..

You're probably right though, it's just nothing is invincible, theres always going to be a way through..

I read somewhere that the main reason they do it is because it allows them to know how many people are using the software.

Obviously it also stops OEMs installing and then selling it as the real deal.

But tbh, it isn't that much of a pain to do once and year, and after all, it remains an excellent free antivirus, and if you had paid for it, you would have to re-enter the license key every now and again anyway.

i realize this is an old topic, but for those out there looking this up, like i did, if you are on a Mac, YES, you do have to pay. Avast does not offer a free home version for Mac :(

the site lists Avast for Mac as $39.95 for 1 year and i believe there is a 30% discount for every year after the first.

i am contacting Avast support to confirm this. i will let you know what i find. ~®
