Default AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0

Basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows available to download for free. Limited features, no support, for private and non-commercial use only.

Download Page

The computer I was trying to install this on kept getting an error that it couldn't create a Registry key. I tried twice and that was enough. The machine now is running Avast! Home Free.

My recommendation is if you have AVG antivirus and are thinking of upgrading to the new 8.0 version save yourself the time and install Avast! Home Free instead. Besides the bad decision by AVG to include the Yahoo! "Security Toolbar" the makers of AVG are in my opinion heading down the same road as Symantec and steadily creating a bloated product that will eventually slow many computers down to a crawl. Thanks for the years of protection Griftsoft, but I am now using and recommending only Avast!.

Which you already did!

Trouble is, Avast keeps stopping me from sending emails, so I am now with AVG!

Hehe, she's a doll.

I have seen where AVG 7.5 likely won't be supported any longer by the end of the year. I think around August (or sooner) is when they will drop it in favor of the new 8.0.

Really? I am downloading now and will post on what happens! I don't want to go back to Norton as it just recently completely screwed my system up.

I get it "free" but it isn't worth the hassle!

Every time I try Avast it eventually stops me sending emails.

Yes I saw on the AVG free forums where 7.5 will be discontinued in the near future. Don't know how true or exactly when but it makes since. They won't want to maintain two free AV's.

Well, that was simple enough! Downloaded the updater, ran it and the laptop froze. Eventually discovered that ZoneAlarm was stopping it.

Stopped ZA, ran installer again with no hitch but at some stage it needed to reboot. Told it to reboot and nothing happened. Started Task Manager and shut down every process I could and then told it to reboot again. This time, bingo, and got all the way to "The computer is shutting down". Eventually just had to knock it on the head by holding the power button for 5 seconds.

Restarted and it is fine! Piece of p*ss!

I made a post over at the AVG Forums. Errr I know how to install software and I am certain the permissions are OK. Don't know if I will try this or not.

Disable WinPatrol once again... I'd then suggest that you download Dial-a-Fix from [wiki.djlizard.net] . Log into a computer admin account then when you run it... go to the Tools section ( the hammer button at the bottom of the window ) ... scroll down to and highlight the Repair Permissions and click the GO button.... restart the computer after it has finished and test again.

Don't re-enable WinPatrol until after you restart and test a time or to just to ensure its working etc.

I whacked it on one of my boxes, running Vista Ultimate and it installed ok. In fact I didn't uninstall 7.5 and the install routine picked it up did that for me. It also gave me the option not to install the toolbar, which I took.

I've been running it for a few days and all seems normal, apart from the green ticks on google searches, where it scans for unsafe sites. I'm running a fairly fast box (2.6GHz, with 3.25GB Ram and 20mb ISP package, so it doesn't slow things down ....... not sure how this scan lark would fair on a 2mb connection, with a low spec though.

Since the above post, I had a closer look at the scan feature and noticed this can be disabled ...... it's called Link Scanner.
Just turned this off and I think it's a bit faster.

Yes there have been complaints of the link scanner slowing down searches drastically. When I was using the 8.0 Beta I also noticed a slowdown on the computer I was using. If I remember right the firewall also disabled Outlook Express and I couldn't get it configured to allow it. I have never been a fan of security suites but thought AVG had gotten onto something with 8.0 but I'm not convinced any longer.

I believe you can uninstall Link Scanner in add remove programs, or you can install LinkScanner Lite as a stand alone without any AVG product installed. Or you can just use the LinkScanner Online without anything installed.
