Check out this thread.

Linkage

Looks like the greed factor is now weighing in on yet another "trusted" free vendor. Toolbars installing by default have never been acceptable. AVG is well aware of this but it seems if it is them doing it then it is supposed to be OK. What a load of crap!!!

Yeah, the free ones normally go that way, trying to recoup costs now they are popular.

Avast are doing a similar thing now where they they try and push you into a subscription after a period of time.

I started to work on a free one called MHX First Defense. I HATE AVG, so I tried to do what they could not offer, a live help client.

Well, there's two ways of offering a free thing. Make a better thing for a good price and offer an upgrade, or add advertising. Looks like AVG chose the latter, but in a bad way.

I heard this was only included with version 8 ... (i.e. the commercial product), but you have the option not to install it at installation, all be it they camoflauged it as a Security Toolbar, by adding other bits to the Yahoo bar (crafty beggars).

Have they included it in FREE version 7 as well now ?

Haven't seen anything on it but did just read where the updates/downloads for AVG Anti-Rootkit Free will no longer be available as is now included with commercial versions of AVG 8.0. Speculation is growing that they may do the same with the antispyware since it is now in the 8.0 as well.

I hope not .... I went to AVG's website and checked today and they are still supplying free version 7.5, which I downloaded and installed on one of my boxes.
I can confirm it has no toolbar, but we will have to keep an eye out for it, in case they merge it in, without telling anyone.

Be sure to click the link at the bottom of this post. Loads of new information being discovered.

Check out a response left by someone from AVG in a blog complaining about the toolbar.
Quote:
the majority of threats are now coming from the web, so it seems logical to start incorporating the threat protection into the browser
As opposed to the threats coming from exactly where?

People testing the install are also reporting that it in fact does install by default. Period!!! That is with or without the option checked. At this time it is only in the new 8.0 version but rumored to be included with an update in the free version later in the year.

Source and more information.
