I noticed last night that in Micro Mart #968 there is a recommendation to readers to download and install AVG Free. Having been flamed recently by evilfantasy for recommending it myself, which he claims is in breach of a EULA that is irrelevant to me since I don't use it myself, I thought it interesting to see that others feel the same way about AVG as me.

I, probably like most of the members, don't want to listen to your squabbles, so please, drop it.

Personally I don't like AVG, I have found it will not delete or repair many viruses it finds.

Avast gets my vote.

There is a (fairly) new AV that is being talked about quite a bit. I am thinking of adding it to the downloads section but have not tried it myself yet. 15.8 Mb for Win 2K/XP/Vista. Free.
I may uninstall the AV from one of my comps and try it out later.

There is also a new anti malware that I will be adding in a few days to the downloads. 1.22 Mb provides free realtime protection too. Supports all version of Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP/Vista. Free. I just need a few more days to get to know it better.

Thats the one but I have never heard of Avast slowing down a computer that wasn't already slow.

Agreed, Avast has to be one of the least resource hungry AVs out.

Question is, is it free? Answer YES! So try it and see. And take MicroMart's reco to try AVG too. Then try one against another by seeing what one picks up and another doesn't.

Many of these programs---antivirus, antispyware, defrag---are a hog on CPU time when scanning or defragging and there is a trade in between speed of execution and system response. I generally only do manual scans, when I know I am not wanting responsiveness on a slower computer.
