The problem with avg free is that you need to update the program manually, each and every time. With big named virus protection and paid subscription its most likely done automatically.

I have just opposite experience. I have used Kaspersky for 2 months, it didn't find any virus for two months. I uninstalled it, and installed NOD32. It didn't find any virus during the scan. Finally I installed Avg Free, and it found 3 viruses during the scan, and since than 3-4 warnings about new virus detected.Just to mention, before Kaspersky I was using Symantec, I can't remember which version, and it didn't catch any virus either. So I guess, there isn't perfect antivirus out there, if you want perfect security, you should combine more of them. And when it comes to Avg, I will stick to it at the moment, cause it's the only one that reports viruses for me, but also more important, it doesn't make me problems like the others. With Kaspersky I couldn't play online games, with NOD32 I couldn't download torrents. What's the use of security software that restricts you the use of internet?

AVG is a highly overrated piece of low end anti-virus software. In a multitude of competent independent comparative reviews, AVG has consistantly scored low in detection of viruses and other forms of malware. It also has a high number of false alarms.Norton has a high detection rate but most find it a bit on the bloated side. Unless you've already paid for it, try Kaspersky Anti-Virus. It is distributed for free under the name "Active Virus Shield" and is one damn fine piece of software. Highly effective and easy on resources. It's detection rate is uncanny.www.activevirusshield.com

The only think I can tell you is that when some one post a question asking for a good free anti-virus.75% of the answers go for AVG,Nod32 and Avast. If most of the Yahoo guys recommend it, you can't go wrong
