I read many recommendations for Avast and after using AVG Free for years without any problems I decided to give it a go. It looks really good but for some reason my speed slowed down significantly, left it there for a few days hoping things would settle down but problem continued so uninstalled Avast and re-loaded AVG. Problem solved.

Did you uninstall AVG before you installed Avast?

Yes, I have CC Cleaner installed and deleted it from there + deleting the remaining bits in the control panel - search.

AVG 27.2 Mb
Kaspersky 21.4 Mb
Avast! 16.1 Mb

I do not know why Avast would slow you down. It is almost half the size of AVG.

Gave it (AVAST) another go last night, again made sure of complete removal of all AVG files including vault and user sets. Avast went in a dream but again, my speed had slowed again. Pity because it really looks good and I'm sure it is, maybe just my system. However, reading reports that AVG does not pick up effectively - Avast picked up 1 detection on the boot scan at installation - I decided to try AVIRA Antivi free edition. Speed is unaffected and on the initial scan it picked up 15 warnings and 7 detections !! There doesn't appear to be much support on the free edition of Avira but I will be leaving it in for a while.
