I use my computer for everything from surfing, paying bills online and gaming. A friend told me that you can get some viruses and trojans, that can actually find confidential personal ID information on you computer like SSN or credit card info, and send it to scammer who then can rip you off. Is this true?

What can be done about it?

I have and anti-virus program called Cyberdefender on my computer, is that enough protection?

They can only steal what you type in.

Some will remember when you type your credit card info or passwords into websites you visit, then send the data back to the viruses home via the net.

Just be careful what you do online, only buy from reputable sites - You wouldn't give your details out to someone in a back ally so don't do it online.

That and regular virus/spyware scans.

Have a good updated antivirus and firewall. Cyberdefender is no where near enough as it is only antispyware and quite honestlt not a very trusted one. Their advertising methods are very similar to that of rouge software.

I do have a good firewall, (I believe) and I keep Cyberdefender updated. My version 'Arial','sans-serif']looks for trojans, malware and sypware - not just viruses. I've not really seen them advertise anywhere, my husband had used this at work, that was why we got it.

'Arial','sans-serif']Hmmm - some food for thought. Maybe a little more homework is on order on my end. Thanks for the help guys.

Actually I think there are two or three different Cyberdefenders. Another reason I don't like it, but thats just me. If it works for you then that's what matters.

What antivirus do you use?

If you don't mind posting a HijackThis log we can see what all is going on, recommend anything needed (free), and hopefully give you some peace of mind.

Download TrendMicro HijackThis.exe (HJT) to the Desktop.
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I use Cyberdefender anti-virus. I got the free anti-virus scanner first off there website (www.cyberdefender.com) which found a lot of stuff on my system and got rid of the spyware and Trojans. I also had viruses, so I bought the upgrade which got rid of everything on my system. The upgraded version comes with 24/7 computer help, which I used twice and they were very helpful. So, for me, Cyberdefender works great. I have tried some others that didn't work nearly as well.

This is the second forum you have posted in one of my malware removal threads about using CyberDefender hankfarkas. I'm going to start treating it as spam and removing them.

CyberDefender has very questionable sales tactics. Very similar to that of rouge software.

Not really. It just shows what you have installed on your computer.

I don't see anything alarming in the log but it won't hurt to double check.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Some of strong virus or spyware, malware they can keep your information while your typing number like credit card etc. so be always safe while surfing on the internet and always surf secure sites because there are less posisblilty of virus and spywares so, keep on scanning time to time with anti virus and anti spyware tools.
