Hi, i am currently having a problem on my Windows Vista (32 bit) laptop. I noticed some error with my Windows Defender last week but took no notice of it. It turns out, the error shown in Windows Defender, says "cant check for defenition updates". Whilst checking other things on my laptop, i also found these symptoms which may hopefully help you identify what my problem is:

(Please note that my laptop only has one user, therefore this is through an administrator account)

Control Panel will not open at all (it opens, blank window and then shuts again, but it opens in safe mode and i dont seem to have installed anything dodgy recently. I tried to uninstall some recent programs like a Office compatability pack but an error with windows installer came up)

Windows update will not open

Backup and Restore Centre will not open

Games included with vista will not open

If i right click My Computer and click Properties, nothing opens (although opens in safe mode)

Lavasoft adaware does not suspect anything, and neither does SUPER Antispyware. Avast antivirus doesnt detect anything....

Please can anyone help? I would be extremely grateful. =] Thanks

one of the malware group may correct me on this, but sounds like a virus, I had one similar to this a while back. managed to remove it with Avira in the end, free of the 'net

This doesn't appear to be a malware issue. Can you try this? How to automatically repair Windows Vista using Startup Repair

OK, lets run one more scan to be sure this is or is not a malware issue then go from there.

Download DrWeb CureIt & save it to your desktop. Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:

  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe and then click Start
  • An information notice will appear, click OK.
  • This starts a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory.
  • If you get a prompt to buy the full version just exit out of the window. The scanner will still work without buying the full version
  • If or when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.

  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Settings > Change Settings
  • Under the Scanning tab UNcheck Heuristic analysis and click OK
  • Back at the main window, select the Complete scan button and then click the Green Arrow Start Scanning button on the right and the scan will start.
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move any file(s).
  • When the scan is done.
  • In the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top left, click File and choose Save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your Desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

* After reboot, Right-click the Dr.Web log on the desktop and choose Open With > Notepad
* Copy and paste that log in the next reply

I forgot to save the report... but 5 viruses were removed... if i remember correctly it was something like VBS Generic.45.... They were all the same virus i believe because they were associated with the windows vista sidebar gadget... (*miniradio" - which i installed months ago so i doubt this is the problem)

By looking this problem up on google, there seems to be a number of cases like the problem i am having and i am unsure whether to intall the reccomended hotfix:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936686/en-us

The other forum i went on said some other stuff which i also checked out... and it appears that in my services... "SL UI Notifcation Service" and "Software Licensing" do not start on startup (when i try to start them myself, the quickly turn off...) - i thought this might help give you more information...

Just to let you know - i can access things like system restore and control panel through Windows Explorer as i discovered, but they do not run from the start menu... (And i do not have any previous restore points which i can restore back to...)

Thanks for your help so far by the way. =]

Open Dr Web and click one of the tabs in the upper left (either File or Options), you can get the log from there.
