Ok, so this is a stupid question but you know by now I'm not the sharpest knife in the chandelier lol.

I am putting the finishing touches on my daughter's computer (she's 6). I downloaded Spybot and Avast4. Avast4 shows up in both my admin account and on her user account, but spybot only shows up in the admin. Is it working in both with one download to the Admin account? How about "Scotty" (Winpatrol)? If I download him to the admin account will he still be active on the user account? I noticed I had to download Adobe to both accounts and for both browsers, Mozilla, and IE, for a total of 4 installations. DO I need to do the same for Spybot and Winpatrol, or will the notices pop up on her account as well.

Also, is there I way that I can prevent her from just clicking yes if they do pop up on her? She basically goes to the Disney site right now, but she will expand her horizons.

Info: XP SP3, P4, chip. (old system lol).

When you installed there was probably an option to install for just you, or for all users, I would recommend re-installing and making sure the "all users" is selected during install.

No. There wasn't. Furthermore, I would take it as a personal favor if you no longer offered me advice. I don't find that you know what you are talking about and in your rush to win the points for most posts post insipid replies.

Have you installed any of the programs to which I refer? If so did YOU see such an option? I did not and I have been able to read and comprehend the written English language with a high degree of competence for around 40 years. I am not asking for "think" or "perhaps" or even maybe. I am asking from expert advise from qualified people who KNOW what they are talking about.

If this seems rude to you then so it is. I won't say sorry because I am not. There are times when perhaps you should not pass up a good opportunity NOT to respond to a post when you have absolutely no clue as to what you are talking about. I have pretty much avoided all other parts of this site to distance myself from the contest of idiots with nothing to say yet a hungering desire to do so and to do so repeatedly. Would it be too much to ask that you leave the virus portion alone until and if you ever know what you are talking about? I am really lacking patience at this time in life and have less of a desire to suffer fools than normal, and my normal is rather low.

EDIT: If anyone competent in the field reads this thread, I think I found my answer to a small degree. Scotty barks for both accounts, but I had to immunize the user account for Spybot separately. I can only assume that the rest is working correctly. I guess I'll keep researching and find an answer eventually.

Well if you don't like the advice don't ask for it, I was only trying to help.

Note to self: Never waste my time considering a topic made by Bubba.

Bubba,

First of all, Spybot. Spybot will scan for various types of malware all over the computer, and it is quite good at that.

But in my opinion, the way it handles multiple users, especially when considering use on a network, is shocking. This is basically because of the way it uses parts of the Windows API to scan local profiles (user accounts). Basically scanning multiple user accounts from one account is impossible, and under pressure, the Spybot people will admit that. That is why there corporate version is not very often used.

Also, as I think you say, there are a lot of problems when using the block bad pages thing. Basically if it is used on a limited account, you get a lot of 'confirmation to block' messages - and there is not accepted solution to get around this problem.

Personally, I don't use Spybot, and for the sort of use that your daughter will be doing, I think you will be fine running without it. As long as she doesn't stray too far from Disney, then she shouldn't be visiting too many dodgey download sites.

This is also the reason why 90ish percent of Windows users run as an admin user all the time.

By the time your daughter wants to visit other sites on the internet, she'll probably want more control over her computer anyway.

Next Avast. I do not have a lot of experience with it, but I am pretty sure in saying that installing it on the admin account and setting a regular full system scan you will be good to go.

As for Winpatrol, I think that if you install it on the admin account, it should be OK, but again, you can probably do without it. According to their website it will be OK - but I don't actually use it myself.

Finally, and what really confuses me, is you having to install Firefox twice? This really should automatically propagate to the other user accounts.

Also, I am surprised that the installer would run twice. Does it show up in the Start Menu on both accounts?

Finally, something that I really would wholeheartedly recommend, is setting up OpenDNS.

I'll let you have a read of what it is about - I am in a bit of a rush, but basically it offers some of the best web content filtering and control of any commercial program, and the best bit is it is completely free.

Lastly, I wasn't going to mention it but I do feel that your reply to thingie was uncalled for. What thingie said is true in quite a few installers, all be it admittedly not it this one. Whilst thingie might not know everything, as none of us do, he is very helpful for many people here on the forums. Without people like thingie, the more specialised people who can deal with problems related to viruses or networking would have to spend more time dealing with other more common problems, and have less time to devote to more difficult things.

What I am trying to say is that is all a process - someone will start by asking some general questions, maybe they are boring or simple to answer, but they let us have an idea of the problem. Then maybe they will have the answer, or they will pass it on to someone else who has more experience or knowledge of the matter. For example in this particular thread, I only came across it because I was alerted through another means.

I do not have time to read every thread posted, and had thingie had just left the thread, then it is unlikely I would have ever responded.

Yep .... I would second serverguy's recommendation for OpenDNS ..... as well as filtring, it can speed up your internet browsing significantly too.

Bubba, you asked for help, that's what you got.

Your response was totally uncalled for, the competition finished ages ago, regardless, thingie was just trying to help. His offering is a viable solution, many softwares have the option he noted.

This is not the first time you have acted aggressively to a member here unprovoked and it is not acceptable. So lets stop it.
