Hi there all, combining this with intro as I think I missed that part - not tremendously techie here. Nightwolf is treasured if sarcastic nickname from ineptitude at night orienteering with youth group in Germany. I'm an aging youth worker.
Problem: recently bought computer from friend who used internet only occasionally while main use was for uni assignments. Over the last couple of months have been making use of it with Mcafee antivirus and windows xp firewall. Downloaded and installed XP SP2 and was surprised that it did seem to have no problems.... for a couple of days. All was going well but over xmas it has become dismally slow. Task manager performance shows cpu usage catapulting from zero to 100 % and positions in bewtween every second. Have just downloaded free spy-bot and avg to tackle it and AVG is trundling through its scan, Processes list shows a total of 52, mostly quiet with a battle seemingly between winlogon.exe and avg.bat and demands for Mcshield.exe, explorer.exe and System for cpu time popping up. Task Mngr shows AVG and AVG update running though interestingly according to my logon screen there are 5 programmes running. Of course these problems are all due to my kids using msn, limewire, bebo and facebook, none of my own doing. Any simple cures out there? Love to hear from you.
