Default Explorer.exe messing up.

An unusual problem with my laptop incurred this morning, and I have no idea what the root of it is.

Basically, after I log in as usual and my Anti-virus and all the other star menu icons appear, a box comes up saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

It gives me the option to send an error report, or not to send one as well as look at what the error report says. The error report makes no sense to me, unfortunately, being huge and made of loads of codes. I've tried pressing "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send" but either way, the Explorer.exe bar disappears, and reappears, closing everything else with it.

I've tried countless times, sending many error reports and choosing not to send, but to no avail. I tried to run a full anti virus scan with the internet disable, etc and also Spybot S&D (forgive me if this is a major mistake).

Is there anything I can do about it?

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

This could be malware. Please post a HiJackThis Log so I can check.
Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open HiackThis.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the log in your post.
    • Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Even though we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

Post the HijackThis log in the next reply.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

Also, I forgot to mention that there is a single registry entry that Spybot S&D detected, but was unable to remove on account that it might already be in use and need a restart. Upon another restart, the same problem happened. Because it's a registry entry, I didn't want to tamper with it because I was unsure of the consequences.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

Moved to Virus, Spyware & Security.

What version of SpyBot are you using? If it is the 1.4 version you will need to update to 1.5

First, disable Spybots Tea Timer so it doesn't block any fixes we attempt.

Please do all of this. You can re-enable Tea Timer when we are all done.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent our tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your logs are clean.

First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Third:

With both Tea timer and SpyBot closed download ResetTeaTimer.zip
  • Unzip the file.
  • Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by SpyBot's TeaTimer.
  • Once it's ran, you can delete it. It will not be needed again.
Note: If TeaTimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

--------------------

Next, uninstall one of the firewalls.

Having two is not a good thing. It can cause system slowdowns and crashes.

-------------------

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only then place a check mark next to:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: Flash Saver - {09EA1F80-F40A-11D1-B792-444553540001} - C:\PROGRA~1\FLASHS~1\save.htm (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Flash Saver - {09EA1F80-F40A-11D1-B792-444553540001} - C:\PROGRA~1\FLASHS~1\save.htm (file missing)

Close all windows except for HijackThis and click Fix checked

Exit Hijackthis.

---------------------

Then check the version of Spybot, if a the 1.4 version is installed then uninstall it and download the 1.5 version making sure to NOT enable Tea Timer.

Run a scan with Spybot removing what is found.

Then post a new Hijackthis log.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

Those can be fixed. You also seem to have attempted to delete files via S&D, namely these two:
Code:
C:WINDOWSsystem32driverscore.sys
C:WINDOWSsystem32driverscore.cache.dsk
I know that these are malware related. Could you browse to those locations (make sure in folder options you have selected show hidden files and system files) and see if those files are still there.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

I have followed all the three-step instructions, and have ended up with these results after trying to fix the four problems that came up in Spybot S&D:

Spybot prompts me to run again on start up because the last file is currently running and is unable to be taken care of.

I've just ran another HijackThis log, and the text file says the following:

I also just checked the C:Windows/system32/drivers and found both the core.sys and core.cache.dsk. Not sure if that's a positive thing or not.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

I'm going to sleep in a bit, but I will leave the computer on instead of turning it off or restarting it, just incase that might lead to any other problems.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

We are going to get it all cleaned up. We just need to get everything lined out so it doesn't block the fixes.

I will post new instructions in a few after looking at the log.

Be right back.

Default Explorer.exe messing up.

That looks much better, still some work to do.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

You may want print out these instructions or copy and paste them to notepad and save it to the desktop as you will not be able to see this page in safe mode

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before Windows starts to load and selecting Safe Mode.

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder on your Desktop, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
The program will start cleaning your computer and go through a series of cleanup processes. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. This process can take some time depending on your computer, so please be patient. When it is complete, it will close automatically and you should continue with next step.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If it is infected and a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll with the clean file. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Suggested Step:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.

Now reboot into normal mode and add this new rapport.txt in the next post.

WARNING Running this option on a non infected computer will remove the desktop background. So only run it once!

---------------

Please download Combofix by sUBs from either here or here

IMPORTANT - Combofix.exe MUST be saved to your your Desktop.
  • Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc)
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with Combofix. <-- IMPORTANT
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • From the keyboard select 1 and press Enter
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you.
  • Post that log in your next reply.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop.
If interrupted it may leave your computer frozen.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Next post please add
