Get a router that plugs into your modem. A hardware firewall like a router is always better than a software one like ZoneAlarm. They are more secure and don't take up any system resources. I like my Linksys G.

Thinkgeek.com has something called the Stingray Firewall - it's a hardware firewall that learns what to block in a very intelligent manner. It will not get in the way of games, web browsing, or other normal internet activity; it will stop all intruders like a brick wall that's been set on fire. Setup is ridiculously easy, just plug in all the right stuff and you're good to go.

I would agree that a router is the best answer. Don't bother with a software firewall.BTW, someone mentioned a few free firewalls. Note that Symantec (Sygate) has ended its free firewall service as of 11/30 and the Kerio firewall has been purchased by Sunbelt Softwall (originally it was going to be shut down as well).

I would NOT use the firewall that comes with Windows XP, it only blocks one direction of traffic. I personally use Symantec Norton Internet Security. I like it because I am allowed to change just about every setting that is imaginable. Also if you have a high speed intetnet (always on) I would suggest using a router from Linksys/Cisco. This will give you and added layer of protection using NAT and some routers do come with built in firewalls that should be used with a software firewall. Good Luck there are alot of options to choose from.

I agree with the answer that suggests a Router is best. Although a software firewall's is effective, for the average user it is overkill and can cause issues later on when users inadvertently block necessary Window’s services. As for Norton Internet Security, it is an ugly beast that takes over your computer. Stay away!
