I was having issues with my computer so I followed the "Malware Removal Guide" steps up to step 6 and it seemed to fix all my problems. After I did all that I download AVG free edition and after a complete scan it came up with 2 more infected files. I then decided to do step 7 and 8. Could someone please help me ensure my computer is malware free?
I was also wondering about AVG free edition. Does it offer good real time protection from malware while surfing the web? If not, can someone recommend a free alternative that would or is AVG my best bet? Thanks. AVG free edition is about as good as any other. None are "bullet proof".
Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only. Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there) R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com Important: Close all windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked. Exit HijackThis. ---------- The two files found by AVG are not really a threat and one can't cause any harm at all unless you do a System restore. We can flush your restore points to make sure nothing else is hiding in there. Disable/Enable the System Restore Utility to flush old infected restore points 1) Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties. 2) Click on the System Restore tab. 3) Put a check mark next to Turn off System Restore on All Drives 4) Click the OK button. 5) You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click the Yes button. Now re-enable System Restore To re-enable the System Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'. 1) Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties. 2) Click on the System Restore tab. 3) Remove the check mark next to Turn off System Restore on All Drives 4) Click the OK button. ---------- Does everything else seem to be OK? |

Done. Followed your advice and now everything seems to be clean as a whistle and working great. I just want to thank you personally evil fantasy for your help and your clear and easy to follow instructions. I have one last question. Those 2 files found by AVG are now in the "virus vault." What is the virus vault and should I empty it or do something with those files?

The rule of thumb is usually to leave them in quarantine for a day or two. If the computer is still running fine then delete them whenever you want. Sometimes a legitimate file is flagged/removed (false positive). It's easy to restore it from quarantine.
---------- A few more things you might want to have a look at. Use the Secunia Software Inspector to check for out of date software. Out of date software has security vulnerabilities that malware can exploit.
---------- Go to Microsoft Windows Update and get all critical updates. ---------- Make sure all of your security programs are up to date and run scans with them regularly. Here are some great FREE tools to help you keep from getting infected again. These tools use little or no resources so won't slow down your PC. Concerned about Browser Security? Consider using Mozilla Firefox. With more than 15,000 improvements, Firefox 3 is faster, safer and smarter than ever before. For Internet Explorer 7 users there is IE7Pro. IE7Pro is a must have add-on for Internet Explorer, which includes a lot of features and tweaks to make your IE friendlier, more useful, more secure and customizable. To prevent unknown applications from being installed on your computer install WinPatrol * Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software I suggest using WOT - Web of Trust. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites.
