Default Help...Pretty please - no start bar, desktop icons etc...

Hi guys,

Basically when I turn my Laptop on, my desktop BACKGROUND loads, asin the picture - but nothing else, nope, zilch, nada..Pressing different buttons does nothing either - as well as Safe Mode..

I have a Dell Latitude D500,

I'm 99% sure I have a virus? I lent my LapTop to a mate so that he could record a DJ mix - I had a trial version of Sony Sound Forge audio studio on there only he decided - without telling me - that this wasn't good enough, he wanted the full program.

So, unlike most and buying it decided to try download it from LimeWire....couldnt work out how to install it so downloaded about 12 copies and now my computer is up sh1t creek

A friend of mine said wipe it and re-install? Is that the best option? Can I rescue it? If so, how?! If not, then how do I wipe the poor bast*rd?

Thanks in advance! Nice board btw

Try using the "boot up in last known good configuration" and see if that works. to do this, press F8 as the computer is booting up, then use the arrow keys to navigate to the desired mode, then press enter.

Let us know if you can get on properly like this or not.

Do you get to the log on screen, or do you get stuck before that, or do you not have a log on screen?

I don't have a log in screen...

I have the usual Windows XP on boot-up with the yellow dots running through the tube at the bottom...then it'll go black for a few secs then the pic of me and ex will come up...then a box asking username/password but it's always just said admin and I hit enter...

From there it's just the wallpaper :(

When you get to the desktop press (all at the same time) ctrl+alt+delete and see if the Task Manager comes up.

If so, in Task Manager go to File > New Task (Run...) then type explorer.exe and click OK.

Do you have your normal desktop now and can you get online?

No it's not back to normal but it will be easier to fix now.

Download TrendMicro HijackThis.exe (HJT) to the Desktop.
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
