| I assume the desktop is connected via ethernet cable? Login to the router by opening Internet explorer and entering the IP address of the router into the address bar. Your manual will tell you what IP address to use., something like 192.168.0.1 The go to wireless settings. Set the SSID to something relevant to you, leaving it generic like linksys234 means if someone else nearby does the same you can't tell if you are on your network or theirs. Set your channel to 11, its commonly the best. Leave the security blank for the moment. Save and reboot. Use the laptop to scan for the new network, hit connect. If that works then login again and setup a wep key. Then rescan using the laptop and enter the same key used in the router when prompted.

| What make and model is the laptop? Has it previously been setup to work on another wireless network, some old setting may still be present.

| I have an Advent. The only time it has been connected to the internet before was the same internet connection but via a cable instead of wireless. |

| Are you using the built in windows wireless software? Does it try to connect at all? Do you get an error message?

| Do you have the wireless icon in the taskbar? Right click it and select status, then tell me what is the status. Then, click the support tab and let me know if any details are there.

| It hasn't got an option for status. Support tab? The options that are on the wireless tab are: Change windows firewall settings Open network connections Repair View available wireless networks |

| Ok, you need to enter the IP details for the PC manually. What is the IP of your router?

| Ok right click the wireless icon again. Click status, then properties, then double click TCP/IP from the list. Enter the following into the boxes. IP Address: 192.168.1.9 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1 Click apply and OK to exit the windows. Then reboot the laptop. See if that works.

| I entered the details you gave me, and it worked!! Restarted the computer and i have internet with no cables. But not on the connection i expected, in the bottom right corner it still says disconnected. And it says on the network connections page that im connected to '1394 connection' |

| Are you sure you entered those details into the wireless connection and not the 1396 connection? Open network connections and you should see both, check the settings i posted for both connections. If any settings are entered into the 1394 connection remove them. If settings are only in the wireless connection try disabling the 1394 connection by right clicking it and clicking disable. Let me know how you get on.
