After a recent virus attack (W32.beagle.AAW) and eventually getting rid of it (Mcafee Stinger) I'm left with several hidden files in various locations on all drives.

All the boxes are ticked or unticked as required to see system files etc but when I go edit, select all, a window appears to say there a number of hidden files.

When I connect a clean external drive to backup data these mysterious hidden files appear (EDIT: when I say appear I can't see them I just know they are there.

An internal slave drive was formatted within windows and those hidden files appear there too.

Of course now I can't make reliable backups.

Windows XP SP3, Avast, all updated.

Any ideas?

Regards Paul.

Download and rename HijackThis.exe (HJT)

Alternate download link 1
Alternate download link 2
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open HijackThis.
  • Important! If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
  • Click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
    • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Note: Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.

I don't see anything wrong in the HJT log, that doesn't mean something isn't there. Run the two malware scans in the sticky just to be sure.

You might download Folder Size to help you locate what you're looking for.

Do you know any of the file paths?

Thanks but this has changed with SP3 and the ordering seems a bit different.

I think I've checked/unchecked the boxes as needed.

I have found out that the file autoruns when the contaminated drive is connected to another PC and now I have another infected computer, Avast flagged it up but didn't stop the file from running.

The "virus" disabled avast, windows security centre, Sygate firewall and spybot and thats just the ones I know about.

The second computer will get a LLF and a reinstall

Is it a flash drive?

A flash drive and external hard drive seemed to autorun ( both USB2)

Having formatted and reinstalled the OS on the second machine I've noticed that the folder options menu is as normal, I thought SP3 changed the layout, perhaps not.

The hidden files are not found on the hard drive when connected to the second PC either.

Everything seems stable at the moment so I'll try backing up everything across the network and format the first machine.

All very curious.

Thanks for all your help much appreciated.

Regards Paul.

Did you clean the Flash Drive as well? You had an autorun worm most likely and there is a tool to address that

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop:
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
  • Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
  • It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
  • Follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.
