Computer's been acting up - had some serrrrrious issues with the 'favourite links' explorer thing totally messing my computer up.

buried 'music' and 'pictures' and 'desktop' and 'documents' under 78 folders of links/music/links/music etc

Managed to delete them all and back up from my external harddrive, but the computer's still running a bit juddery.

[amd 64 x 2 3.0gh, 4gb DDR2 667mhz RAM Dual-Channel, 8500GT 1gb video card...]

I don't see any malware, but you need to update Firefox to the final version.

i'm using Firefox 3 - for some reason it installs itself in the beta 5 folder... but help > about shows i'm using version 3.0

You needed to uninstall the beta version prior to installing the final. Maybe you should uninstall it then delete the beta folder and install a fresh version.
