Hey Evil, long story short, I f'ed up my other computer for a little while and am using my old one. I just ran an HJT log on this one and wanted to be sure it was cool. It's been spybot'ed. I'm in the Malware U course now and doing my first PL, so don't tell me what any of the processes are or I'll get kicked lol, but I wanted to know if this computer was good.
I should have done this BEFORE I went there on this machine but I forgot. Thanks. Since you are now starting to learn about malware, let me ask you - do you think this log is clean?

Ok sorry. Yeah I think it's clean but not because I have a clue yet as to what I am trying to do. I THINK i have practised pretty darn good computer security on this thing since I got it. I have run Spybot and the commercial version of Symantec (as opposed to the consumer version or the free version) on it since I got it. I used to use Zone Alarm as a my firewall and they were decent at the time.
I am thinking though that I have not updated Java in about 6 months or so there is a vulnerability there. I also have been unable to get the office updates to install for almost a year, hence other possible vulnerabilities. When my new computer went down (lol I spilled some beer on it today while trying to get my first PL done) I had to use this one. I remembered that I was not supposed to use a computer that was not clean for training so I ran HJT on this one. Do NOT tell me please, anything about my process log. i have to do that myself and I WILL do it. I just want to be sure that I am in compliance with the Malware U's policy of a clean computer. I guess maybe I should have posted this there, but i have come to like and trust Evil, and to an extent you, (I have not read you as often as Evil). I like the fact you are testing me, but I am just so new at this that I can't give any definative answers. Ask me in a month lol. And thanks. EDIT: I WILL however ask a question. When I did the HJT on the downed computer it only showed 10 processes. That didn't seem right to me so I opened up Windows task manager. Sure enough there were 64 processes running according to that. Why the HUGE difference? |

Don't worry, I won't tell you any answers. If I did that, what would be the point of your training? You won't learn with me telling you answers - you learn by making mistakes. I make this clear to all trainees joining the Academy where I teach malware removal.
I will tell you that, based on the log you posted, that machine appears to be clean. Something to bear in mind though - HJT is a useful start point for looking at a PC - it does not, however, give you the full story. This is something you will learn over time. In response to your question about the processes, let's start at the beginning - what exactly is HJT? What does it do? It's time for bed here, but I'll pick this up again tomorrow. |

Thanks alot bro. I appreciate the help. It's nice to have an "outside" resource that i can bounce thoughts off of without worrying about you giving me answers. If I step over the line I know either you or Evil will tell me.
EDIT: I'm going to do this processes from this computer, not the other one. Tother one was too easy. I knew at a glance what alen of those were. i have to research the ones off this one. |

It's refreshing for me also having Glaswegian give his views. It's good to have input from more then one source.

SO I turned my "new" computer back on. Here's the HJT log. See the Processes though? It shows 10 while my task manager shows 64. What's up with that? The 10 that are showinfg I don't need to know anything to know what they are. Also I know the rest is clean.

You didn't answer the two questions I asked earlier about HJT - those answers will help you understand what you are looking at in the log.

Sorry, I didn't have the answer then, I had to look it up and beat it into my brain.
HJT is a utility used to help identify malware. It produces a listing of specific settings found on an individuals computer. It scans the registry and other files (I don't know which other yet, I just started) to llok for entries similar to those spyware or hijacker programs would leave behind. SInce legitimate programs leave sometimes leave the same things behind, I have to learn the difference. |
