i think the best and appropriate place is www.download.com. just type antivirus on the search box near the top and then click search. when you receive the results, go to the bottom of the page, and refine your search by choosing "free" from the drop-down menu box, and then click update. then you will see all free anti-virus softwares, with review and recomendations, and of course any string attached, if any.

I use Avast Anti-virus. Its home edition is free and I never had any viruses since I'm having it. After downloading, you have to register it within 60 days otherwise it's gonna stop working.
