Looking at the logs things look OK. Do you have your install disk(s)? You may have to try a repair install.

Hi,

I started the computer this evening and lo and behold - the control panel is back!!!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks that it remains OK - very many thanks for all your help. Incidentally, I don't have the install disk for Windows XP, it came pre-installed - what would I have done in these circumstances?

You suggested in one of the earlier e-mails about recommending virus/spyware etc.

I currently have AVG Free edition running, plus AOL spyware and the firewall that comes with AOL. Is this OK for the future, or should I replace?

Kind regards

Wayne

Thank goodness!!!!!!! Sometimes a restart will do wonders.

The AOL Spyware is OK but has known to be buggy at times. Not sure about the firewall but have not read anything bad about it.
I would suggest this if you decide to try something other then AOL Antispy.

It is reliable as real time protection.

Run spybot once a week or so, remembering to check for updates each time.
Also I would consider installing this Ad-Aware. It is good to run a few different scans now and then. They each pick up different things.
Keep AVG running along with your firewall.
I'm glad this got sorted out!

Before we finish these steps need to be done. You can wait a while but do this sometime in the near future. You may wait a few days. A infected restore point is better than no restore point.
Flush infected restore points.
System Restore
1: Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select properties.
2: Click on the system restore tab.
3: Check the box that says "Turn off system restore on all drives". Click OK.
4: Click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer
5: To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

As a note, the smitfraud virus you had is one of the oldest and best written virus there is.
Written so well that antivirus and antispyware can't stop or remove it.
Thats why we had to go through more steps then normal.
The best anti malware is the user. Safe surfing.

Hi,

I am having the same problem as Wayne, but can't attach my hijackthis log notepad txt as when I go to advanced mode and upload it says that it is invalid. It is 11k so with the limit. Is it ok if I copy and paste the text in the Go Advanced box for you to look at?

I suggest you start your own topic trev, the limit is 20k so this should accommodate your text file.

You seriously should consider a move to Linux. If you can run Windows, you can run Ubuntu. No more spyware, no adware, no viruses(yet), no more scan disc, no more defrag.
