they are both free and the best out there IMHO. but how in the world do they make money? surly they cant just be doing this to please us.

but that just cant be how! i mean surely more people just take the anti virus and shrug off the stuff you buy. they are after all, one of the best anti virus out there. i remember someone telling me a while ago how they got there money. it wasn't by selling the other stuff they had.

Exactly, they all have home versions with extras like live support and speedy update downloads. But even more so they sell corporate packages for big$$$$$$$

eventually, they also make money by marketing their companies by distributing free software. For exemple, you use avg anti-virus, and it's great. So you go to their page, see other products and buy them, cause you also think they'll be great.

Wouldn't these free programs help the companies research and development?
Giving statistics on users,software failures,all sorts of information on the development and spread of viruses.
Helping the company to improve all its products,free and otherwise.

i have thought of all the way you are talking about. but im looking the this one reason in perticular. something like the government (or someone...) sponcers them and the more people that they get to use there product the more money they get. so being free also increases there pay. something like that, not exactly like that thogh.
