Do you have any security programs installed that may have it disabled. xp-Antispy?

You can go to the registry key and change the default value and re-enable them manually.

Go to Start > Run type regedit and click OK
Find the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\au
In the right pane, look for a key called noautoupdate
Change the value from a 1 to a 0

Restart and see if it has changed.

Sorry, just ran across this.

Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm go to the tweaks section and get the tweak called "Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore."

That's great, thanks a million evilfantasy! It looks like the minor infection I had was unrelated to this.

Once again, cheers.
