Default IEXPLORE.EXE virus problem

Hi there,
I noticed I had a problem when I heard music mysteriously playing. I checked and saw a bunch of IEXPLORE.EXE processes running.

I ran NAV, Ad-Aware, Defender and then followed the instructions you provided. Thanks in advance for the help. Here are the logs:

Sounds good. I left out the download link from post # 2 for Spybot. I would suggest installing and running a scan with it. Download Spybot-S&D Use the instructions from post # 2 to set it up correctly.

This is a good time to clear your infected system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and click Next.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Next to System Restore click Clean up...
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Default IEXPLORE.EXE virus problem

You was infected by a RAT (Remote Administration Tool). I would do a search for a klog.* file to and delete it, should normally be in either system32 or windows folder.

RAT's are really popular with script kiddies and use cryptors to prevent AV detection and binders so they can bind the trojan to apps.

When I found out I got hacked by a RAT, by downloading warez, I had a look at the program myself and it had a crap loads of features keylog, webcam viewer, password cache. SO the chances are when you heard music playing, was someone manually going through your files and opening them.

If you come across same activities such as music playing, password changed or even your webcam turned on then instead of installing a bunch of useless AV programs and Malware removal crap. Check your Installed Components in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Active Setup > Installed Components and just click on each of the folders and look for a entry which just has a STUBPATH pointing to a .exe in system32 or your windows folder.

To see if it is that .exe in the active startup, navigate to it and run it. If it says that it is being used by another program and the name of the .exe isnt showing in your process list then it is being injected into another process, such as your defualt broswer (IE). Then you can use HJT to delete that file upon restart and obviously delete the registry entry.

RAT's are the same as IRCBOT but a RAT just has a GUI, I woudl recommend a Firewall, therefore if a program wants to randomly connect to the internet you can deny it and still use the program. Because the trojan is binded to the installation file, the trojan extracts and executes when you go to install and will try to make an exteernal connection and if you block it then you have a trojan but arnt infected because it will just sit in a directory doing nothing.

Sorry to blabber on, hope this has given you a broader horizon on the potential danger on RATs and IRCbots.

Hey Brad, thanks for the info.
I did what you said and all of the .exe referenced by the stubpaths that I double clicked were not being used by another program. So... does that mean I am ok?

Thanks for your help.

LOCALHOST would you mind giving me some references as to your malware removal background? At what forum do you normally assist in malware removal.

Did it just show a stubpath and nothing else? You could be looking at the wrong key. It just says stubpath and then quite simply a location.
