Default Lost Desktop

Last week I had the horrible red screen with bio hazard symbol. I followed the instructions on your document to do before asking questions. It got rid of the red screen, but I still don't have my desktop back. The wall paper shows as the computer boots up, but after programs have loaded, it turns white...blah...I can't arrange icons because it thinks there is something there.....not sure what to do....can you help me?

Post a Hijackthis log.
Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open HiackThis.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the log in your post.
    • Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Even though we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

Run a new HJT scan and copy it straight from the notepad that opens.

Yes, you have some nasty ones left on there. We should be able to take care of it though.

----------

Download ViewpointKiller
  • Unzip the program and all of the contents of ViewpointKiller.zip to a location such as your desktop.
  • Double click the ViewpointKiller icon to run ViewpointKiller.exe. Select the File menu, and select Check to see if you have Viewpoint installed.
  • If ViewpointKiller indicates that any of the Viewpoint variants are installed, select the proper Kill option in the File menu.
  • Follow the prompts and instructions very carefully, answering Yes or No depending on which option you are most comfortable with.
  • The MsConfig instructions are very important, so be sure to read them carefully.
  • Note: When done with ViewpointKiller right click and delete all files that were unzipped.

----------

Download SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard).
  • Finally add the contents of the Report.txt in your next post.
----------

Please download Combofix by sUBs from one of the below links.
(Try all three if necessary)IMPORTANT - Combofix.exe MUST be saved to your your Desktop.
  • Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc)
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with Combofix. <-- IMPORTANT
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • From the keyboard select 1 and press Enter
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you.
  • Post that log in your next reply.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop.
If interrupted it may leave your computer frozen.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

----------

Next post please add
SDFix log
Combofix log
