Hi,
I have a new Gateway laptop with Vista Basic. Please advise what free-ware firewalls and ani-virus programs are compatible. Thanks. |

For anti-virus get Avast, it's free and is probably the best available, including the paid stuff.

Thanks for your reply. I been using Avast on my XP desktop.....but I thought there were compatibility issues with Vista and certain firewalls...Zone Alarm(?).

I don't run one as I have a hardware firewall in my router.
But if I were to recommend one it wold be Comodo Firewall. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ |

The thing with the Windows built in firewall is that it is not bi-directional. It blocks incoming traffic very well. But if something does get in, which we all know happens, there is nothing in place to stop outgoing traffic. That's why third party firewalls are advised to use.
See Microsofts article on this. Why would I consider a third party firewall? |
