SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right-click My Computer and click on Manage.
In the new window that appears, expand the Event Viewer (by clicking on the + symbol next to it) and then click on System.
ok the green arrow has come back itself havent done the XP cd , do i still need to do it ? and what about the restore point advice you gave..should i just carry that out alone and leave the XP cd?

You can try both to see if either will work. I would try the SFC first.

With the PC already running and signed in to windows.

Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
  • Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away

<Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!>

Delete the copy of Combofix from the Desktop if you have it and download the updated version.

Download Combofix by sUBs from one of the below links.
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Click <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!> to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log.
  • Please save that log to post in your next reply.
  • Re-enable all of your security programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hi ..just come off the desktop pc and have tried to turn off firewall in Mcafee secuirty centre...but it isnt turning off. I was thinking.. I don't have any pics ..music or any work on that pc that i may be afaird to loose. Would it be easier for me to just reformat the pc back to factory settings..does that make it all ok? If so then how do i go about doing this. Also the avast that has expired can i not just uninstall avast and download it again? Its just that some things i am struggling to understand..when i am given options and i don't understand alot of the terms jargon etc...

Go <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!> for a new Avast key.

Just try running combofix, it should run OK without turning off the firewall.
