my first time at getting a virus

the other day i re installed a fresh copy of windows due to pc freezing ect eneyway i spent most of the nite installing softwere and putting my music back on from backups over 5000songs..5clock in the morning was close and be for i went for some sleep i tho i would sort out my sound drivers as updating the drivers wouldn't find them..searched the net and found one on this website looked ok as it even had a picture of my exact motherboard ect so downloading i goo and when it was complete 5 black boxes come on my screen ( like command line boxes) next i new my background changed to a red screen with text saying SPYWERE ON YOUR PC a screensaver was also installed with like bugs crawling on the screen then i couldent click my ikon's on my desktop and when i did try to click a ikon a website loaded up then a program ikons appeard on my desktop at this time i switched pc off at the plug to stop eneything els installing..i dident download anti virus (my first mistake)
search and destroy tried its best to get rid of the virus but without success.i think the virus altered windows files to much.eneyway in the end i re formatted the harddrive and re installed windows..AGAIN the next nite but i got my sound drivers in the end and everything is running perfect now just tho i would share my story as i no there is people on here that love a virus/spywere challenge

also i have installed AVG FREE 8.0
but i'm having problems configuring it to work with other download programs like msn (when someone sends me a pic avg will automatically scan it
i set msn to use the avgscanx file in avg (command line scanner)
but its not working i dident have a problem with the old avg
eney advice on this would be appreciated as i really don't want a second virus

my first time at getting a virus

WoW i wish i read that a while ago..like before i got my virus
can i just say something about avast..i installed it and i found it slowed my pc down thats with no scan running.my pc is only 2ghz running 2gig ddr ...i don't notice avg at allso avg for me.
will i be safe using just avg?i no its free so only protects me from viruses. am one of them people that like to have the least programs running in the background to get the most out of my performance
i cant believe a website is up and running giving people who visit a virus

AVG is fine.

It is usually easier to clean a computer with the steps in the guide and then a few follow up steps (if needed) once you get the logs posted rather than reinstalling Windows and all of your backups.
