Default Norton Antivirus problem.

This isn't for the laptop I'm currently using, but a friend's.

She recently had problems with Norton Antivirus and wanted to try an uninstall and installation again to solve the problem. It went wrong when Norton wouldn't install again, and she is unable fix it.

I'm going to try and have a go myself today, but is there any particular advice you could offer besides following the Symantec website's trouble shooting?

To be perfectly honest i would not go back to norton again, as it is too resource heavy and not the most effective antivirus, there are better free alternatives.

Avg antivirus or Avast antivirus will do a much better job and are free. They can both be found easily via Google.

Personally, whenever i sort out a pc that has Norton on it i remove it as the very first step.

Norton causes far more problems than it solves.

Hi King,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your post. The easiest way to resolve this issue , is to properly remove and reinstall Norton AntiVirus. Also, please make sure that there are no other antivirus applications installed on this computer, as multiple applications will cause problems. Please remove any other antivirus applications first.

Please follow the steps below to properly remove and reinstall Norton AntiVirus.

1. Click on the link below, and carefully follow the instructions to use the Norton Removal tool:

Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

2. After the tool has run and removed all Norton products, restart your computer. Log in to Windows and run the tool a second time, and then restart the computer again.

3. When your computer is back up and running, make sure that your Internet connection is working properly.

4. Reinstall Norton AntiVirus using the original media. LiveUpdate will run towards the end of the installation and download and install any available updates.

5. To make certain that all program updates and definition files are installed, manually run LiveUpdate using the following method:

(A) Click "Start"-> "All Programs"-> "NortonAntiVirus"-> and choose "LiveUpdate." from the sub-menu. LiveUpdate will begin to connect once again and you can see the progress of the updates in the window. When it has completed, you will then see a message in the window that says "Your system is up to date."
(B) Click "Finish" to close the LiveUpdate window.

Also, can you please reply back to this thread and clarify which version of Norton AntiVirus your friend has installed and which version of Windows.

Try this process and reply back to this thread and let me know if it resolved your issue. Also, can you please reply back to this thread and clarify which version of Norton AntiVirus your friend has installed and which version of Windows.

Thank you,
Mike

Default Norton Antivirus problem.

.... or better still, use the Removal Tool and install a superior product.

Nortoon is bloatware at it's best and hogs system resources as well as creating other issues ....... it will eventually break your system and you are better off without it. Also, despite all the sales hype, it isn't particalarly good at detection.

Sorry Michael York, but NOD32 is a far superior product and far less demanding on resources.

Thank you very much for all of your advice. My friend's Norton Antivirus is now fixed (she preferred to keep it), and I have a lot more information on free and efficient anti virus programs. I really appreciate all of the help.

I would just like to say that the new nortons, 360 and 2008, are not resource heavy at all due to a complete change in coding. i agree, 2006 was extremely hungry and slow, but they are much better now.
