Problem opening applications

Ok, here's my problem:

I can't open newly downloaded applications/programs. Most programs I got before this started happening still work, but now some of them won't open either. Whenever I try, an error box pops up. It used to be that files that I transferred from other computers using a flash drive would work, but not anymore. I've run virus and spyware checks, but my computer's clean, apparently. Rebooting doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

Lets take a quick look at a HJT log.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)

• Double-click on HJTInstall.
• Click on the Install button.
• It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
• Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • Close HijackThis and rename it.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
  • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
  • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
  • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
• From the desktop open HiajckThis.
• If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
• HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
• Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Although we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

Moved to Virus, Spyware & Security

You have a few different things (malware) that could be causing this to happen.

Why is the computer still using SP1 and not updated to SP2? (don't update it until the malware is gone)

Can you download anything?

Boot into safe mode to run this after it is installed and updated.

Download DrWeb CureIt & save it to your desktop.

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:

• Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe and then click Start.
• An Express Scan of your PC notice will appear.
• Under Start the Express Scan Now Click OK to start.
  • This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory.
  • If or when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
• Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
• Choose the Scan tab and UNcheck Heuristic analysis and click OK
• Back at the main window, select the Complete scan button.
• Then click the Green Arrow Start Scanning button on the right and the scan will start.
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move any file(s).
• When the scan is done.
• In the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top left, click File and choose Save report list.
• Save the DrWeb.csv report to your Desktop.
• Exit Dr.Web Cureit.

• Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

• After reboot, Right-click the Dr.Web log on the desktop and choose Open With > Notepad
• Copy and paste that log in the next reply

Post the log back here.

I can download things, but it's just that I can't open applications. So, this Dr. Web CureIt program might not open either. How do you change the computer's boot mode?

By the way, newer programs still don't work on normal mode, and now Firefox isn't working properly. It opens, but nothing else happens. I'm using IE now.

You had ran combofix at one point, how long ago?

Can you get a new Hijackthis log? Run it in safe mode if you have to.

Download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
• Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

• Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
• Click the red Moveit! button.

• Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
• Close OTMoveIt2

Important: Be sure to restart the computer if OTmoveIt2 doesn't do it.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
