Default Protection level? Adequate?

Hello all, new user.

Just wondering...

Me being quite paranoid I'm eternally concerned over computer security and the likes.

I currently run (have installed) quite a few anti-malware programs.

These include Avira AntiVir, AVG Free, AVG Anti-Spyware, Comodo Firewall Pro, Threat Fire & Spyware Doctor (PC Tools). Also AVG-Anti rookit free & Hi-jack this (which I run and take a look infrequently.)

These are run & update frequently; very seldom do I detect anything seriously untoward. Generally, If I ever find anything it's usually harmless adware etc.

Basically what I would like to know is, am I heavily enough protected? Is what I've got sufficient?

If not, what further steps can I take? (E.g. Anonymous surfing client, would it provide more protection?)

I'm technically minded so don't hold back with any responses.

Advice much appreciated! Cheers, LB.

*NB I'll have no issues with system perf. or net browsing speed. I'm using a high end machine and pretty fat pipe.

Welcome to the forums!

You can never be 100% protected, but there are a few definates which you can take into consideration when further protecting your pc.

I would advise using adblockplus if you're using firefox. If you use a different browser, change to firefox.

There are methods like IESpyAd which basically ads over 1000 websites to your blocked list, which can greatly help blocking an unexpectedly malicious website. You can also change your security settings in your browser to ask you everytime you wish to run activeX content, as these can be equally as lethal as running an anonymous .exe.

A few programmes I would consider installing would be ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, spywareblaster, and possibly CCleaner.

At the end of the day, the best and worst security threat is the user - if you are very careful about what and where you browse, along with added security like you have, you will generally be safe.

Cheers Gaz.

(I already use Firefox)

I've actually had Ad-Aware in for a while now, forgot to mention.

I've taken your advice and downloaded the other utilities you mentioned, they seem sound.

Not found any infections that I didn't see before as of yet, but it's good to know I've got a plentiful and comprehensive Arsenal of anti-malware utilities at my disposal.

[Cryptology is my forte so I know as well as most that you can never be 100% secure!]

Anyway, Thanks a lot for the advice & the recommendations.

LB.
