| Hi again guys. Back from my hols and still trying to sort this computer out. None of the things I've tried have enabled me to download and install windows updates. I'm trying to remember if I actually registered my new copy of windows when I did my upgrade. Could this have that kind of effect? If so, how do I get to the registration page? I also notice now that links in email and some other programs dont open when I click them. It does open a new page in OE but there is nothing to see, no text etc...The plot thickens.. |

| Registration is optional but activation is mandatory. But if it isn't activated you won't even get to a login. Your internet security settings may be too high. In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security, Trusted sites, add the sites www.update.microsoft.com and windowsupdate.microsoft.com and untick server verification, then try Windows Update See if you can get the updates from M$' downloads area.

| I tried that but when I try to download and install it goes thru the motions before saying these updates could not be installed, but doesnt give a reason. I've read all through the help files etc but nothing works..The part about links not working in OE is another problem. Maybe I should start a new thread? |

| I think these are the instructions I followed. The important step seemed to be deleting c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution Unistall Windows Installer 3.0 or 3.1 from <Control Panel><Add or Remove Programs> Download WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe to local folder (e.g c:\Download\) from Windows KnowledgeBase Download WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe to same folder Reboot to Safe Mode (F8) Delete folder c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution Reboot normally Click <Start> <Run> Enter c:\Download\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce <OK> Reboot Run WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe from c:\Download\ Reboot Go to Windows Update site Windows Installer3.1 will install automatically Reboot Go to Windows Update site and install updates

| Well Mike I just copied the files into notepad as it said and all is ok. It installed 9 updates but 81 failed. I rebooted and now they have all installed! Bingo. Lets hope thats the end of it.. Should I start a new thread regarding my failed links problem? I thought it was just OE but it appears that links that simply say "click" or similar usually fail to open. I get a new page but no text etc |

| Great news! Yes, a new thread might be a good idea as it will get lost in here! All the best!
