| A mate of mine managed to download the Starware368 browser hijack. It seems he also got a video controller with it. His laptop claims he has installed some hardware which needs a video controller and a video controller(vga). These two controllers are in Device Manager and enabled. They are also flagged with the yellow question mark. When a DVD video is inserted, there is no video but there is sound. It was working fine before he got that Starware hijacker. |

| Thanks EvilFantasy, I expected that, but I was hoping you might know a quick simple fix. He has just started working for the same company as me and he's off to Europe tomorrow morning for the week. I'll send him a link to this forum, so he can post a hijack this log. He'll need step by step instructions on exactly what he needs to do. He's got Hijackthis on disc from a computer magazine I gave him, so that should be safe enough. You can be sure that if he tries to download it, it'll be a dodgy site that he tries to download it from. |

| The problem with the disk is it is likely an outdated version of HijackThis. Safe instructions for downloading HJT are in This Post Starware is a rather innocent piece of malware by itself. But as you stated he visits dodgy sites and the problems described suggest more then just Starware. Last edited by evilfantasy : 29-09-2007 at 07:45 PM. |

| We managed to get rid of Starware, I think. Starware may not be the only thing he managed to collect though. But when he gets back next weekend, I'll get him to post an HJT log, so anything else can be picked up. The problem with these video controllers appears to be connected with downloading Starware, but I'm not sure. Simply that when Starware appeared (as if by magic lol ), so did these video controllers and his New Hardware Wizard started up. The disc came with this months magazine so I'd hope it was a very recent HJT, but as you say, could easily be out of date. I'll tell him to download it from your link instead. Thanks. It isn't so much that he visits dodgy sites by the way, not intentionally anyway. Simply that he's only just got a computer and is rather an "innocent abroad" on the internet. You can only advise your friends on what is the best practice, you can't force them to follow it. He's learning fairly quickly, but not quickly enough apparently. | Yes I think the problem is deeper then Starware. I should have mentioned earlier. You can normally uninstall Starware in add/remove programs. You may find a few other things in there to remove as well. I am going to move this thread to the Virus, Spyware and Security Forum and also give some instructions in the next post I make. |

| Download HijackThis Here Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop. Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Some new versions save to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue. Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there. At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This. DO NOT PUT HijackThis.exe ON THE DESKTOP OR IN A TEMP FOLDER. This is important because it will create backups and they are easily lost if not installed correctly. *Important* Rename the Hijackthis.exe file to Analyze.exe. This is important because some new forms of malware can hide from HijackThis.exe. Right click the HijackThis.exe file in C:\Program Files\HijackThis and choose rename. Type in Analyze.exe and press the enter key. Right click the Analyze.exe file and send to desktop to create a shortcut. Next click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file button". It will scan and then a log will open in notepad. Right click the notepad and click "select all" Right click again and select "copy" Paste the log in your next reply. DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. ============================ Download AVG Anti-Spyware saving the installation file to your desktop. * Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program. * Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files. * On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link. * Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. * Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab. * Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine". * Under How to scan? **All checkboxes should be ticked. * Under "Reports" Select "Automatically generate report after every scan" Also, Un-Select "Only if threats were found". * Under "What to scan"? **"Select Scan every file". * Now close AVG Anti-Spyware and procede to the next set of instructions. * Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode". You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the "F8" key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then press "ENTER". * IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess: * Now lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop. * Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan". * AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time. * Once the scan is complete do the following: * If you have any infections you will prompted, when prompted select "Apply all actions". * Next select the "Reports" icon at the top. * Select the "Save Report As" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important). * Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
