Default Urgent Security Problem with Mozy

I have a progam called Mozy installed on my laptop. Unfortunately I really don't know much about this progam at all as I'm not even slightly technical. As far as I understand it, it's an internet-based way of saving things to another workstation/server.

Apparently it has been saving everything on my laptop to a remote Mozy server (to which I do not have the password as it was not registered in my name). The original intention was for someone else to have a spare copy of my work in case I somehow failed to save it properly on the laptop I have at home. Now I realise that not only "normal" Word documents have been transferred but everything on the laptop, without my knowledge let alone permission - including personal emails etc.

The settings were probably changed by a certain, highly-skilled IT person whilst my laptop was unattended. I don't think the default settings for Mozy would leave all boxes ticked for copying, so I assume it was a deliberate decision by that person. Please, please help me.

Is there any way I could find out if it's true that this certain person really does not have access to any password which would give them access to this information? It doesn't make sense to me - why would someone want to have a copy of anything that neither of us can access?

Unfortunately there isn't much we can do. This is between you, the IT person and Mozy.

I suggest contacting Mozy and seeing what they suggest. http://mozy.com/support/contact

This sounds not very safe or secure, to be honest maki I would change all of usernames and password where ever possible this means that the copy that mozy have on there servers is worthless, even if it was used in the wrong hands I would still follow it up with them also as this by some reckoning shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place.

Thank you for your advice. I have now reset my password. However, when I did do this a new message came up: "Please start MozyHome config on each computer on the account in order to enter new password." Does that mean there is definitely more than just my laptop on this account or is that just a standard message? Basically I'm wondering how I can be sure I have done this password update securely?

I'm very worried as the email account that was used to set up MozyHome on my laptop is the one which was hacked into in the first place! I can't find the password for that email address but I didn't need the password for the email account in order to change the password on MozyHome.

Ok all I would do it simply UN install this mozy program and then make sure all your apsswords are changed and written down by hand on a piece of paper, and then do the same on a word document but place the file in a password protected folder. I really highly recommend that you do not use this program again it sounds to unstable, and anyone could gain access toy our email and then cause maybe bank problems and money problems hope this helps regards rob.

Should I just wait to hear what Mozy support people say before uninstalling it? Otherwise I won't be entitled to their help - or to getting any evidence for the police, will I? If any damage has been done, there isn't much more of that to do. I'm worried I won't be able to prove anything. Mozy should at least be able to tell me if there has been an actual attempt to retrieve info, won't they? I know that the person concerned did do an authorised transfer of data via a blog I was writing in Feb - he was probably making a copy of it, but I'm not really sure.

Well in all honesty, evan if they did try to take info from your system what would they gain by telling you the end user ??? nothing they would then be liable and it would not go down to well. So I dont even think they would disclose if there was a breach of not seeing as they are a small time company.

You can reformat and reinstall. If whoever set you up with the Mozy account then they might have also installed a keylogger. Better safe than sorry.

I don't think they would have installed a key logger this is because you install there prob and you save the passwords manually to there correct ? if not and it does it automatically then 99% certain there is a key logger.

Well, I was able to change the Mozy password manually from here, but who knows if it can be done elsewhere on another pc? I really don't know enough about IT. (I'd never even heard of "key logger" before. It's like a different language!)

The person who may (or may not?) have accessed my info - I'm yet to hear from Mozy - would definitely not admit this. But I'm hoping Mozy can tell me whether this has been done or not, even if I'm not the person who originally subscribed to it.
