Default Virus help

My uncles computer keeps displaying a message when trying to access files. If i try to access My Computer fr example, a message appears "Critical Error; microsoft XP files corrupted, download antispyware here" when cancelled, it redirects me to the internet to download a spyware for $40. It is becoming very annoying. I have ran a virus check in both normal mode and in safe mode. I do have Hijackthis, and can post the log on request.
Can anyone please help, it will be very much appreciated.
