Today I received an email from someone unknown with a powerpoint file. I downloaded it, and it was just a visual presentation of a chain email quiz. Is it possible that the powerpoint file contained a virus (is that how they're usually transferred)? Or would that be unlikely?...

Yes virus can be hidden in any file.
