Virus removal

Has anybody any ideas on the following

It looks like I've got a virus on my PC and a pretty clever one too. It has removed the AVG anti virus software and won't allow me to re-install anything like anti virus software, adaware software etc, when I say it won't allow me to install what I mean is that it installs the software but won't allow me to run it. For example, I installed 'Spybot search & destroy' and when I double click on the desktop icon it throws up the browse/search button as if it can't find the executable, if I manually drill down to the correct directory the executable files are visible for a split second and then they disappear.
I have run a number of online virus and adaware scans and although the seem to find and delete or quarantine a problem I still can't reinstall anything. Also it won't allow me to run a system restore as it tells me there is no point to restore to apart from one created today, and if I try to reboot in safe mode it gives me the blue screen of death

Any help would be appreciated

Rongrace, please do this.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)

Double-click on HJTInstall.
Click on the Install button.
It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
- Close HijackThis and rename it.
- Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
- Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
- Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
- Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
From the desktop open HiackThis.
If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
Copy and then paste the log in your post.
- Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Even though we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

Post the HijackThis log in the next reply.

I know you have stated that you have ran online scans already, but we may need to run more because I will need the logs to see what is going on and more important how to fix it.

The HijackThis log shows a few things but not enough according to the problems described.

Lets start here.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only then place a check mark next to:

Exit Hijackthis.

Please download Combofix by sUBs from either here or here

IMPORTANT - Combofix.exe MUST be saved to your your Desktop.

Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc)
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with Combofix. <-- IMPORTANT
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
- From the keyboard select 1 and press Enter
When finished, it will produce a log for you.
Post that log in your next reply.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop.
If interrupted it may leave your computer frozen.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Downloaded combofix to my desktop, but when I start it all that appears on screen is a blue box with the cursor sitting in the top left hand corner.

I've ensured that there are no virus programs or IE windows running

Lets try this.

Please download DrWeb CureIt & save it to your desktop.

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:

Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe and then click Start.
An Express Scan of your PC notice will appear.
Under Start the Express Scan Now Click OK to start.
- This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
Choose the Scan tab and UNcheck Heuristic analysis and click OK
Back at the main window, select the Complete scan button.
Then click the Green Arrow Start Scanning button on the right and the scan will start.
- Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move any file(s).
When the scan is done.
In the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top left, click File and choose Save report list.
Save the DrWeb.csv report to your Desktop.
Exit Dr.Web Cureit.

Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

After reboot, Right-click the Dr.Web log on the desktop and choose Open With > Notepad
Copy and paste that log in the next reply
