Just to let you know I'm going to be away for a couple of days, so I won't be able to try anymore until Friday, but thanks for all your help

No problem and thanks for letting me know.

I am sure we will get to the bottom of this now that I know what scans will and will not run.

Default Virus removal

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please attach the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your next post.

Default Virus removal

The logs are clean.

Open Spybot and click Recovery. Empty everything in there.

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for
general malware removal and could cause damage if launched accidentally.

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer OTMoveIt2.exe and place it on your desktop.

1. Double click OTMoveIt2.exe to launch it.
2. Click on the CleanUp! button.
3. OTMoveIt2 will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
4. Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt2

----------

This is a good time to clear your infected system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and click Next.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Next to System Restore click Clean up...
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

----------

Check out this post for free tools and tips to keep you and your computer safe in the future.

Please let me know how everything went.

Try the last part of the steps. It will still remove the infected restore points.
  • Go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Next to System Restore click Clean up...
I will look around for a solution to the problem.

You may need to reinstall System Restore.

Re-installed system restore as per instructions and rebooted as requested. PC now crashes when it's trying to run the start up programs. I tried rebooting in safe mode and it also crashed. Rebooted again using last know good configuration and it crashed again, but this time it gave an error message about a missing file but I couldn't get the name but it looked like run32dll.exe and the message also stated something about framedym or something like that.

This is deeper then just system restore.

You will need to do a Repair Install. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XP...install.htm#RI
