You might also run all of these. (Virut is also known as sality)

I've given up trying to help remove anything once I see any sign of Virut. I've seen a few people claim to get it removed but I never have gotten a solid YES that the symptoms/virus was actually gone and stayed gone without a reformat.

I was going to ask that. Hopefully it worked. I might start suggesting the Live CD instead.

Edit: for anyone reading this.

Dr.Web LiveCD

1. Download the image of the Dr Web LiveCD.iso

2. Burn the Dr Web LiveCD ISO images to a CD or DVD.

- If you need a free burning application, CDBurnerXP works on all operating systems from Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 onwards.

3. Start the computer with the Dr Web LiveCD in the CD/DVD tray. As loading starts a dialog window will prompt you to choose between the standard and safe mode. Use arrow keys to select Dr Web LiveCD (Default) mode and press Enter on the keyboard.

4. When Dr.Web LiveCD (Default) is selected, all available disk drives will be detected automatically. The operating system will also try to connect to the local network if available.

5. When the system is loaded, check all disks or folders you want to scan and click Start

6. Let Dr. Web finish it's scan and then remove any threats found and then exit out of the scanner..

7. Take the CD out of the CD/DVD tray and then restart the computer.

The Dr Web LiveCD also includes other useful features and helpoptions if needed.

* If you’d like to start the scanner using the command line (console) select Dr.Web LiveCD (Safe Mode).
* Choose Start Local HDD if you want to boot from the hard drive instead of Dr.Web LiveCD.
* Select Testing Memory to launch the Memtest86+ utility.

See the Dr.Web LiveCD Homepage for complete details.

Yes the "Live CD" is MUCH better than running it from the desk top, as it's working from a safe mode state.

You might also check this out. http://evilfantasy.wordpress.com/bit...er-rescue-usb/
I don't see why you couldn't put the Dr. Web iso on it instead of the BitDefender.

Tried a couple of USB bootables, and they did nothing for me ( I do use "the ultimate boot disk alot though). The best I have seen so far is the Dr. Web at finding it and (Curing it) you DO NOT want to delete the files!!! But I am going to leave it run on the internet overnight and see what happens, so far she seems to be responding to all my commands. I will let you know in the morning how she goes. Keep fingers crossed, if this works I will post a step by step, on how we did it.

Yea I went through a few USB apps before finding the UNetbootin – Universal Netboot Installer. It's Linux based and then you add the .iso to it. Works great!

The only problem with using a USB bootable with Virut, is it jumps onto the USB and corrupts it! I have had that happen a few times to many...lol But I simply put the usb into a Vista machine, and remove it, as it does not seem to bother Vista as much? GREAT news, just booted the machine again and his Yahoo messenger started at start-up!!! So it's looking pretty good, but again I will let it run over night. I like UBDVD cause it has a few malware programs on it and it has a nice feature to run it on the network to update the software.
