Default Visit Windows Update - Critical

It is very rare that MS releases an update "out of cycle" so this is a very critical update that everyone needs to apply ASAP.

(MS08-067) Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (958644)
A remote-code exploit that could spread rapidly like the 2003 MSBlaster worm is putting all versions of Windows at risk.

Executive Summary

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code. It is possible that this vulnerability could be used in the crafting of a wormable exploit. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect network resources from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.

This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and rated Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that the Server service handles RPC requests. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

Recommendation. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

Hey, I just clicked on the windows update, and there were no critical updates... The only ones there were windows search and silverlight. Could it be that it auto installed the update?

I don't know if they have released it to automatic updates or not.

I would think you might want to go ahead and manually download and install it. Or look in Add/Remove Programs for Update: KB958644. If it's not there the be sure to go get it.

Be sure that there is a check next to Show updates at the top of add/remove programs.

I had that update and .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 to install, so doing that now. I read about this update, but assumed it would be downloaded today by auto updates, but it seems it hasn't.

Microsoft normally only releases updates the second Tuesday of each month. "Patch Tuesday"
It's pretty rare to have an unscheduled update. Which is why this is touted as highly critical. It hasn't happened for somewhere around a year so.

It was there Evildude, and yes CoolyXXX if you have auto update I am reasonably sure you got it. I got it today but I have my setting on "notify me and let me decide to put it in" or whatever that mode is lol. I got on today and there was the critical update begging for me to install it, so I did. If you are on fully auto then you should have it.

Thanks Evil, I was wondering why I had an update on an off day.
