Help!!

I think my computer has some form of virus that Avast, Spyware doctor, advanced system care and windows defender won't pick up.

detail
vista 32-bit, amd 3200, ati express 2400, 1gb ram, 80gb hdd running on an Acer 3050 laptop

Hard disk seems to be working extra hard
the programs that do run take a lot longer to load
most windows apps don't run but explorer and IE8 do
the power and wi-fi indicators are not updating (ie it shows it is plugged in when it isn't and the wi-fi shows the red cross for no connection when the internet is working fine)
when you run taskmanager it goes straight to minimised on the taksbar and if you left or right click notthing happens.
itunes also won't run but mediamonkey does!

I have tried running all of the usual scans but nothing seems to find it

any ideas?
this happened about 8months ago with exactly the same problem and i had to format and resintall vista to fix it. I don't mind doing this again but i don't want this fecking thing to come back again!!
