Default what is a spiral virus?

I tried to install a router on a friend’s laptop; the computer wouldn’t pick up the router
So I tested it and the cable on another computer, which worked fine.

I uninstalled the network drivers and reinstalled them, but the same problem persisted.
I can see the network connection but nothing when I connect the router.

So my guess was probably a problem with the Ethernet card, as its still under warranty the laptop was taken back to PC World, who without running any checks told my friend he had a virus called “spiral”. They advised to back up all their files and do a system restore.

I have goggled the virus and the only thing I can come up with is W32/Hybris
A hybrid of this virus, which show a spiral on screen. This sounds nothing like the problem I have described and no info on this virus says it stops the Ethernet working.

Is this virus capable of doing this?
Is there another virus I should look at which can do this?
Is this just a fob off?

Thanks for any help

merging duplicate threads. Welcome to the forums, but please don't double post, as it can get a bit confusing at times. :)

it doesn't sound as if you have a spiral virus, as that displays graphics on the screen. Personally, I think that pc world is just getting you out of their hair, but that's just me. You can run a quick scan and we can see what's on your machine, though:

[FONT=Tahoma]Please do this:

· Click here to download HJThis.exe
· Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
· Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
· By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
· Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
· Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
· Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
· At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
· Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
· Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
· Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
· DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

thanks

Nothing too serious, just mywebsearch. Go to start > run > appwiz.cpl and delete everything that says my web search in it. Then boot into safe mode, and in the program files delete all folders that say either mywebsearch or viewpoint.

Reboot into normal mode, run hjt, click 'perform a system scan only', close all windows (including and especially your internet connection) place a tick next to the following, and click 'fix checked':
